The Avro Vulcan is a jet-powered, tailless, high-altitude delta wing strategic bomber. It was in service with the RAF for nearly 30 years from July 1956 to March 1984 when it was retired. Initially it was the B.1 Vulcan that was used, being delivered to the RAF in 1956, however from 1960 it was the improved Vulcan B.2 that was delivered. Since retirement two B.2s, XL426 and XM655 have been kept in taxiable condition for ground runs and demonstrations at London Southend Airport and Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield respectively. One Vulcan B.2 XH558 called 'The Spirit of Great Britain' (the Vulcan in the card photograph) was restored for air shows and display flights. She last flew in October 2015 and is now kept in taxiable condition at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster.
