Reverse of Card Reads: Hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus - Hedgehogs are predominantly nocturnal animals, spending the day sleeping and resting. Their coats are thick and spiny, commonly having up to 5,000 spines, each lasting a year before dropping out and being replaced. They provide them with a formidable defence against predators such as the fox. When they feel threatened, they curl up into a spiny ball to protect their vulnerable stomach. They have a particularly long, drawn-out snout beyond the front of their mouth, which they use to help forage for food, rooting through hedges and other undergrowth in search of their favourite foods: insects, worms, centipede, snails, mice frogs and snakes. Their name probably originates from where they forage and the pig-like grunts they make whilst moving.
