Photo postcard showing a row of colourful stripey deck chairs at the beach! The humble deck chair can be seen at many British seaside resorts, and the hiring out of them became established here in the early 20th Century. In England John Thomas Moore took out a patent for foldable and adjustable chairs in 1886 and began manufacturing them in Macclesfield. But did you know that in Northern Europe there have been remains found of folding chairs which date back to the Bronze Age? Foldable chairs were also used in Acient Egypt, Greece and Rome!
